The most common grass in the state, according to the University of Florida IFAS Extension, it tolerates salt and sandy soil well in the region. The grass readily establishes itself from sod. St. Augustine grass grows well in full sunlight and will tolerate shade. In south Florida the sod can be laid year round but the best time for planting is late fall, winter and spring.
